Workbenches and Accessories

Standard Workbench

Dimensions: 1800mm long x 750mm wide x 950mm high.
Weight approx. 120 kgs.

“The bench is the heart of the workshop it should be
strong and have a reliable flat top “

This bench is made from Silver Ash (flindersia schottiana).
This timber is reasonably heavy and stable with a light colour to make working at the bench easier. The end frames are glued mortice and tenon and the stretcher rails are dry mortice and tenon with a through bolt to close the joint. The bench top is laminated for strength and stability. The tops are hand planed flat to exacting tolerances. Clamping access is easy all around the top and the Sliding Board Jack is very useful for supporting both long boards and draw carcases. Dog holes can be drilled to suit your requirements. The bench comes flat packed. Assembly is straight forward and it can be dismantled again for moving.

 Shooting Boards

These small shooting boards soon become indispensable as a bench accessory. The ease of shooting end grain   means perfect joints and small boxes are now possible.
With a sharp and finely set plane, end grain shavings, 1 thousand of an inch thick are easily repeatable. This means very accurate fitting of components. If it needs one more shaving to fit perfectly, this can be done quickly and accurately without clamping.
Simply hold the timber against the fence and the shooting board guides the plane - it’s that simple.
Long grain joints can also be jointed with a shooting board. Straight and square edges are easy and quick, making glue ups easier.

Long shooting boards

1.8m & 2.4m

These are great for jointing boards for coffee tables up
to dining tables. The ability to shoot the long edges quickly
and accurately means anyone can now have perfect joints.
It is also possible to shoot end grain of jointed tops by placing these in the clamps and propping up the other end. Some sacrificial blocks should be clamped at the edge to prevent
tear out.

45 Degree Mitre Shooting Boards

After many prototypes the mitre shooting board is finally resolved, it will cut 45 degree mitres for both small boxes (up to 125mm deep) and small picture frames. These are accurately trimmed with a sharp plane and a mitre shoot. Both left and right hand mitres are possible (eg: moulded picture frames). It also suites both right and left handed users and both wooden and metal bodied planes can be used.

Guitar and Ukulele Timbers

Due to my new found interest in ukuleles I am now offering suitable timber for luthiers and other instrument makers. All this timber has been air dried up to 15 years in my wood shed and I will now resaw suitable species for backs, sides and necks. These will be presented as either fine sawn or sanded book matched sets in sizes to suit both ukuleles and acoustic guitars. Please contact me to discuss your requirements for both sizes and species list.

Mallets

The long handled mallet is designed for adjusting wooden planes but is also handy for many other light jobs around
the bench.
Great for tapping in dowels and closing dovetail joints.
Weight is 180g approx.

The carving mallets come in two slightly different size and weights. I use one of these mallets for bench chisels when they need to be hit. Large 300g and small 250g approx.
They are made from well seasoned Australian Teak.

Bow Saw Kits

Bow saws are designed to cut curves and they need a good quality narrow blade to do this. These saws are offered as a kit including full size plans and template, timber cut to size but not shaped, brass pins for saw, cord to tighten saw and 3 blades (10, 18 and 24 TPI.)

They are easy and fun to build and with some care you will have a quality saw to use for generations.
Spare blades will be available in the 3 sizes.
Complete saws can be purchased to order. More Information

Schools may apply for discounts on Bow Saw kits. Please email me for information.

Gramercy Holdfasts

The best part of holdfasts is how fast they work. You hit them on the top of the arm to lock them and on the side of the stem to loosen. In general they are used (and work even better) in pairs.

The holdfast is designed for 3/4" hole in a workbench top of a 1 3/4" thick or thicker. 6 1/2" reach. Maximum clamping 7 1/4" in a 2" thick bench top.  Made in USA.
